How Far Amateurs Hit Vs. Pros
In this article, the author questions about the topic of what distance people think they hit their drivers vs. how far they actually do. This prompted him to experiment with the reality of the 100- and 150-yard shots for the amateurs and how it compares to the Tour pros hitting from the same distance, with the same target, under the same conditions.
He tested four golfers, two pros and two amateurs and recorded their distances. What he found was that Tour pros carry the ball the same distance every time with the same club within reason. They also have tighter dispersion patterns than all of us with each club.
He also found that amateur players are OK with shorter clubs in regard to carry distances, but once they get outside 100 yards, they focus only on total distance. Amateur players were also found to base their overall distances on the one perfect shot they hit out of “x” number of shots instead of actual averages. Most importantly it found that amateur players try and hit the same club as the pros with little success…
