All five rangefinders with slope offer 6x magnification, vibration-lock confirmation, and a slope mode you can disable for competition. Tip: scroll the table sideways on mobile to see all columns.

Why slope changes the way you pick a club

Flat yardage tells you how far away the flag is. It does not tell you how far the shot actually plays. An uphill approach of 150 yards with twelve yards of rise plays closer to 162, and that is the difference between the middle of the green and the front bunker. Rangefinders with slope do that sum for you in under a second, which is why they have become the default purchase for club golfers.

The important thing to understand is that slope is not legal in competition. Rule 4.3a(1) permits distance-measuring devices but prohibits any feature that gauges elevation change, unless a local rule says otherwise. Every one of the rangefinders with slope below can therefore switch it off, and the better ones make that switch visible from the outside so a playing partner can see it.

We have chosen five rangefinders with slope from our own range, all of which have been selling steadily this season. Prices run from £129 to £479 across four brands. If you would rather have yardages on your wrist, our GPS golf watch guide covers the alternative, and our shot tracking guide explains how the data side fits together.

What to look for in rangefinders with slope

A visible slope switch

A physical switch on the outside of the housing shows everyone that slope is disabled. Menu toggles are fine for casual golf but harder to prove in a club competition.

Display type

OLED displays stay readable against dark treelines and in flat winter light. LCD is cheaper but can wash out. A dual-colour display lets you switch to suit conditions.

Lock confirmation

Vibration when the device finds the flag is the single most useful feature on any rangefinder. Without it you never quite know whether you ranged the pin or the trees.

Magnet mount

A strong built-in magnet sticks the unit to a trolley frame or buggy bar, which saves rummaging in a pocket on every shot and speeds up play noticeably.

Acquisition speed

Anything under half a second feels instant in use. Slow devices encourage you to keep re-ranging, which costs time and drains the battery faster than you expect.

Weather sealing

An IPX7 rating or a water-resistant housing matters in a British winter. Check the case too, since a rigid zipped case protects the optics far better than a soft pouch.

Best overall: Bushnell Tour V7 Shift

Bushnell’s Slope First approach shows the adjusted number on the display instead of making you work it out. A dual-colour OLED keeps the reading legible in any light, and Visual JOLT vibrates the moment you lock the flag, not the treeline behind it.

What separates this from cheaper rangefinders with slope is the confidence it gives you. The adjusted yardage appears directly in the display, in green, so there is no mental arithmetic on an uphill par three. The overwhelming majority of tour players use Bushnell’s slope technology, and across 200 yards the accuracy is noticeably more repeatable than budget rangefinders with slope.

Two smaller features earn their keep. Yardage Range Recall brings back the last number at the press of the mode button, which is useful when you want to double-check before committing. The Slope-Switch itself is external and obvious, so switching to tournament mode takes a second and is visible to anyone in your group. An extra CR2 battery is included.

Strengths
  • Clearest display in the group, day or dusk
  • External switch proves slope is off
  • Reliable lock beyond 300 yards
  • Spare battery supplied
Considerations
  • Three times the price of our value pick
  • No GPS or course mapping
  • Bulkier than the compact models here

At £129, this is the cheapest way into rangefinders with slope that we would actually recommend. Adaptive slope technology adjusts for uneven terrain, readings are accurate to within a yard, and target-lock vibration confirms you have the flag.

Shot Scope has built a reputation for stripping out the marketing and leaving the useful parts. The optics are crisp for the money, the 700-yard ceiling is far more than any golfer needs, and slope switches off instantly for tournament play. The anti-slip rubber grip is a small thing that matters in the wet.

The built-in magnet is unusually strong for this price and will hold the unit on a trolley frame all round. A water-resistant hard case is included. You give up the OLED display and the external slope switch, but if you are buying your first rangefinder, there is no better starting point on our shelves. Pair it with the Shot Scope G6 watch for full round tracking.

Strengths
  • Outstanding price for slope functionality
  • Strong magnet holds firmly to a trolley
  • Accurate to within one yard
  • Two year manufacturer warranty
Considerations
  • LCD display rather than OLED
  • Slope toggles in the menu, not externally
  • Lock is slower than the premium units

Best for data: Garmin Approach Z10

Laser rangefinder · 400 yards to flag · IPX7 rated

The Z10 is built to work alongside a Garmin watch rather than replace it. Range Relay sends the pin distance to the Garmin Golf app and draws a laser range arc on your device, and PlaysLike Distance handles the elevation adjustment.

If you already wear a Garmin, this is the obvious choice among rangefinders with slope. Lasering the pin pushes the yardage onto the watch, so you get the precise number and the front and back green distances in the same glance. That combination is genuinely better for club selection than either device alone.

Among rangefinders with slope this is the connected option. The transparent OLED display is clear, the IPX7 rating shrugs off a downpour, and a replaceable CR2 lasts up to a year. The 400-yard ceiling to a flag is lower than the Bushnell and Shot Scope numbers, but nobody is ranging a pin from further than that. Our Garmin S50 versus S70 comparison covers the watches it pairs with.

Strengths
  • Syncs yardages to a Garmin watch or phone
  • IPX7 rating handles British weather
  • Battery lasts up to a full year
  • Compact at 210g with magnetic mount
Considerations
  • Most of the value needs a Garmin device
  • Shortest flag range in this group
  • No external slope switch
Bushnell Pro X3+ Golf Laser Rangefinder

Best premium: Bushnell Pro X3+

Laser rangefinder · slope with Elements · 2-year warranty

The Pro X3+ adds wind speed and direction to the elevation calculation, producing what Bushnell calls a compensated distance. Adjustable Home Elevation tunes the maths to the altitude where you play most of your golf, and a dual display switches between red and black.

This is the most capable of the rangefinders with slope that we stock, and the wind element is not a gimmick. On an exposed links or a windy heathland, a number that accounts for a two-club breeze removes a lot of guesswork. The locking Slope-Switch keeps the device tournament legal when you flick it across.

The optics are a clear step above everything else here, with better contrast on flags against a bright sky. Whether that justifies £90 over the V7 Shift depends on how much golf you play and how exposed your course is. For a low handicapper playing weekly in the wind, the case is strong. Our full Bushnell Pro X3 review goes deeper.

Strengths
  • Wind speed and direction built into the yardage
  • Sharpest optics in this roundup
  • Locking slope switch for competitions
  • Home Elevation setting for local accuracy
Considerations
  • The most expensive option here
  • More features than most golfers will use
  • Wind data needs the app paired

Best lightweight: Golfbuddy Laser 2S Pro

Laser rangefinder · 161g · 1,093 yard range

At 161g with the battery fitted, you’ll forget it’s in your pocket. Readings arrive in 0.15 seconds, slope-adjusted yardages are standard, and Buddy Mode lets you share a number with a playing partner without handing the unit over.

Speed is the headline. A 0.15-second read means you can range on the move, which matters if you walk quickly or play in a fourball trying to keep pace. The pin finder with vibration confirms the lock, and Scan Mode sweeps across hazards so you can check a carry distance without stopping.

Triangulation is the unusual extra, letting you measure between two points rather than from where you stand. The box includes a carry case, battery, magnet clip and carabiner, which is more generous than most rangefinders with slope at this price. Battery life is quoted at over 5,000 actuations, so a season of golf is realistic.

Strengths
  • Lightest unit here at 161g
  • Fastest quoted read time of the five
  • Buddy Mode shares yardages instantly
  • Complete accessory kit in the box
Considerations
  • One-year warranty rather than two
  • Optics are a step behind Bushnell
  • No external slope switch

Slope rangefinder technology explained

How slope is calculated

An inclinometer measures the angle between you and the target. The device then combines that angle with the line-of-sight distance to produce the horizontal distance the shot actually plays.

Compensated distance

Premium units go further and factor in air density, temperature or wind. The result is a single number that accounts for conditions, not just geometry.

Pin lock and JOLT

Pin-seeking software isolates the nearest small object and ignores background. Vibration then tells you it worked, which removes the doubt that ruins committed swings.

Magnification

6x is the standard and the right balance. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes it harder to find the flag with an unsteady hand.

Device sync

Bluetooth links the laser to a watch or phone app, so you can log ranged yardage against the shot you played and review it afterwards.

Tournament legality

A device is conforming only when the elevation function is switched off. An external switch makes that obvious; a menu setting relies on your word alone.

Frequently asked questions

Are rangefinders with slope legal in competition?

Only with the slope function switched off.

The rules permit a distance-measuring device but not one that gauges elevation change, unless a local rule allows it. All the rangefinders with slope in this guide can disable it. A device with an external switch is easier to demonstrate to a marker than one with a setting buried in a menu.

How much difference does slope actually make?

Usually between half a club and two clubs.

A rough rule of thumb is that every yard of elevation change alters the playing distance by roughly a yard. On a hilly parkland course, that can be fifteen yards on an approach, which is more than enough to leave you short of the green or through the back of it.

Should I buy a laser or a GPS device?

A laser for precision, GPS for the bigger picture.

Rangefinders with slope give an exact yardage to whatever you point at, which is what you want on approach shots. GPS gives front, middle and back numbers plus hazards without needing line of sight. Many golfers carry a watch and a laser, which is why device sync has become a selling point.

Do I need more than 400 yards of range?

Almost certainly not.

Headline range figures refer to large reflective surfaces, not flags. What matters is reliable lock-on to a pin at 150 to 250 yards, which is where you take most approach shots. Treat a 1,000-yard claim as a marketing number rather than a practical advantage.

How long does the battery last?

A full season for most golfers.

These units run on a CR2 lithium cell. The Golfbuddy is rated for over 5,000 actuations, and the Garmin quotes up to a year of use. Carry a spare in your bag anyway, since a flat battery mid-round is the one failure a rangefinder cannot recover from.

Can I return one if it is not right for me?

Yes. If the device is unused, unopened and in its original packaging, you may return it within 60 days for a full refund under our returns policy. Orders over £30 ship with free UK standard delivery, so there is no cost to trying one.

Our verdict

The Bushnell Tour V7 Shift is our pick of the rangefinders with slope for 2026. It reads quickly, the dual-colour OLED stays legible in every light we tried, and the external Slope-Switch removes any argument about tournament legality. At £389, it is a serious purchase, but it is the model we would put in our own bags.

If £389 is more than you want to spend, the Shot Scope Pro L2 at £129 does the important job well and is the most sensible entry point into rangefinders with slope. Garmin owners should take the Approach Z30 for the sync, and anyone who plays exposed courses in a stiff breeze will get real value from the wind data on the Pro X3+.
