Titleist Vokey SM9 – What’s the best grind option for me?

By on February 21, 2022

The brand new Titleist Vokey SM9 wedges provide industry-leading shot versatility, distance control, and spin through their most advanced materials that contribute to more accurate contact and durability. However, to develop this further, the Vokey SM9 wedges come in multiple lofts and grind options to ensure the perfect wedge for all.

Technically speaking, the grind on the club contributes to wedge bounce, which, according to the Vokey website, is “the angle created between the leading edge and the lowest point of the sole or trailing edge”.

In other words, the part of the club hits the ground through contact with the ball. A higher bounce means the leading edge is further off the surface at the address, which sounds intimidating but can be great for wedges, particularly on softer turf or in bunkers with soft sand.

When it is easy to take large divots, high bounce prevents the club from dragging or ‘digging’ into the turf to maximise spin and provide more short-game control. On the other hand, lower bounces are perfect for firmer turf or sand conditions. Designed for clean contact, they provide the utmost precision, allowing for aggressive flop shots of tight lies and are great for those with a shallower swing. However, all of this is great, but combined with Titleist’s six different Vokey SM9 grind options that utilise different bounces for various shots and skill levels, it can get a bit overwhelming, so let’s try and break it down.

L Grind

A narrow sole with minimal camber and bounce fits perfectly for precise, skilled shotmakers, providing them with a wedge to hit a range of shots around the green whether they’re opening the face up for a flop shot or opting for a lower-flighted, high-spin approach shot. The lower bounce also lends itself to those with a shallower swing and is great for firm course conditions.

D Grind

This is Titleists’ high bounce wedge option for lower handicaps. It combines an advanced dual bounce sole with a wide trailing bounce surface to provide the benefits of higher bounce to players in slightly softer conditions than the L grind without losing the versatility and ability to play more aggressive shots around the green. It is also a great option for shallow to neutral swing types.

S Grind

Potentially Titleist’s best all-around performance wedge grind. A narrow, full sole design with a straight trailing edge sets up perfectly for a wide range of shots, whilst added heel relief allows players to open up the face and maintain clean contact when they want to get more aggressive. Although lending itself to shallow to neutral swing paths, this option is excellent for all course conditions.

M Grind

The M grind is a multi-purpose, specialist high-loft option available only in 54-60-degree wedges. A more rounded sole with forward bounce and a moderate camber promotes versatility around the green and more consistent bunker performance.

F Grind

As an all-purpose grind that is great for fuller wedge shots, the F grind is a perfect option for golfers of all levels. The full sole and slim trailing edge optimise turf interaction on longer wedge shots whilst allowing for players to remain aggressive around the green.

K Grind

The most specialist wedge grind of the Titleist Vokey SM9 lineup, advertised as the ultimate bunker wedge. A larger sole, wide camber and higher bounce allow for a steeper angle of attack and complete control over an array of shots across medium to soft conditions.

Wedge Grinds

Although Titleist Vokey SM9 wedge has been designed to tailor to particular needs, it is always worth consulting a custom fitting process to optimise your setup completely.

Particularly within wedges, this can often be neglected but is probably as important as ever to ensure you select the right lofts to match up with your yardages and bounces to suit course conditions.
