Ping G740 vs G440 vs i540: Which Ping Iron Is Right for Your Game in 2026?

By on March 17, 2026

Quick Verdict on the Ping G740 Irons

The Ping G740 irons are Ping’s longest and most forgiving irons to date – a super-game-improvement set that genuinely delivers on its promises.

Available in steel (£1,049) and graphite (£1,099) for a 6-club set, the G740 represents a significant step forward from the G730, with a 22% wider sole, longer blade length, and a new 3-piece PurFlex cavity badge working together to maximise launch, forgiveness, and distance consistency. The steel-shaft version with the Ping AWT 3.0 is our pick for most players, offering the best balance of control and the game-improvement benefits these irons are built to deliver.

Tested by our PGA professional Mark Crossfield, who has amassed over 330 million YouTube views, these irons impressed on course and on the range. As an authorised Ping retailer, every G740 set purchased from The Golf Shop Online comes backed by our 60-Day Play Better Promise – so you can try them with complete confidence.

Why the New Ping G740 Irons Are Worth Your Attention

There is a moment in most golfers’ journeys where honesty pays dividends. Not every player needs a blade or a muscle-back. For a large number of club golfers – those who know they would benefit from more help, more launch, and more consistent distance on mishits – the super-game-improvement category exists for a very good reason. And at the top of that category, Ping has just reset the benchmark with the new Ping G740 irons.

The G740 is the direct successor to the well-regarded Ping G730, and on paper the improvements are meaningful: a 22% wider sole, a longer blade length, a new 3-piece PurFlex cavity badge, and a lower CG that Ping says produces faster ball speeds and higher launch, particularly on the low-face strikes that most amateur golfers make more often than they care to admit. These are not incremental changes for the sake of a new model number. This is a genuinely evolved iron built to do one thing above all else: help you score better.

Ping G740 Technology Explained

Ping has always been a technology-first manufacturer. The G740 brings together several distinct engineering solutions, each targeting a specific weak point in the amateur ball-striking profile. Here is what is happening inside the head.

Wider Dual-Camber Sole (+22%)

The sole is 22% wider than the G440, which does two important things. First, it pushes the centre of gravity lower and further back – increasing MOI and making the club dramatically more stable on off-centre strikes. Second, the dual-camber profile improves turf interaction, helping the club slide through the turf rather than digging. For players who tend to strike the ball low on the face, this is one of Ping’s most impactful design decisions.

3-Piece PurFlex Cavity Badge

Behind the flexible Hyper 17-4 stainless steel face sits a new three-piece PurFlex cavity badge. This badge serves a dual purpose: it dampens unwanted vibration frequencies to improve the feel and sound at impact, while also supporting face flexion to ensure ball speed is not restricted. The result is a club that sounds and feels more solid than you might expect from a super-game-improvement iron.

Extreme Perimeter Weighting

The longer blade length and thicker topline of the G740 push mass to the perimeter of the clubhead, maximising MOI in both the horizontal and vertical axes. This is what makes the club so resistant to twisting on mishits – and what turns a shot that would otherwise lose 20 yards into one that holds its line and distance remarkably well.

Shallow Face and Shorter Hosel

A shallower face height combined with a shorter hosel saves weight in two places that would otherwise contribute nothing to performance. That saved weight is then repositioned deeper in the cavity, further lowering the CG and improving sound and feel. It also means the G740 has a face designed to help golfers who consistently miss the sweet spot low – arguably the most common mishit among higher handicappers.

5 and 6-Iron Length Progression

Ping has added a 3/4-inch length progression between the 5 and 6 irons (compared to the standard 1/4 inch). This helps golfers avoid the common problem of bunching distances in the longer irons – where a 5-iron and 6-iron end up going the same distance. The longer length helps generate more club head speed and a higher launch where it is most needed.

Hydropearl 2.0 Finish

The Hydropearl 2.0 chrome finish repels moisture from the face, ensuring consistent launch angles and spin rates regardless of conditions. For UK golfers playing in damp rough or wet fairways, this is a genuinely practical technology that helps maintain predictable ball flight throughout a round.

Precision-Milled Wedges: The G740 set includes four wedges – PW, UW, 50-degree and 56-degree – all of which feature precision-milled faces and grooves.

Milled grooves are sharper and more consistent than cast grooves, giving you better spin control and more reliable performance on shorter approach shots. For a set built around forgiveness and distance, having properly engineered wedges completing the set is a significant advantage.

Ping G740 Steel Irons – Our Recommended Pick

Ping G740 Steel Irons

The G740 Steel Irons come fitted with the Ping AWT 3.0 shaft (available in Regular, Stiff, and X-Stiff) and a Golf Pride 360 Tour Velvet grip as standard. This 6-club set at £1,049 represents our top recommendation for the majority of players looking at the G740 range.

Loading widget...

The AWT 3.0 is a purpose-built iron shaft designed specifically for game-improvement irons. It uses a non-linear weight progression through the set, meaning the long iron shafts are lighter to encourage club head speed and higher peak height, while the short iron shafts are slightly heavier for improved control and accuracy. For a set built around maximum forgiveness, pairing it with a shaft engineered to complement that philosophy makes complete sense.

Key Specifications – Steel

Ping G740 Steel Irons Specifications

  • Set Makeup: 6 clubs (configuration varies – custom options available)
  • Stock Shaft: Ping AWT 3.0 (Regular, Stiff, X-Stiff)
  • Stock Grip: Golf Pride 360 Tour Velvet
  • Body Material: 17-4 Stainless Steel
  • Face Material: Hyper 17-4 Stainless Steel
  • Price: £1,049

Strengths

  • Maximum forgiveness – highest MOI in Ping’s iron lineup
  • Consistent distance on mishits thanks to extreme perimeter weighting
  • Easy launch – low CG promotes high, stopping ball flight
  • Improved sound and feel via 3-piece PurFlex badge
  • AWT 3.0 shaft perfectly matched to the head design
  • Precision-milled wedges included for short game consistency
  • Hydropearl 2.0 for reliable performance in all UK conditions

Considerations

  • Larger profile – may not suit players who prefer a compact look at address
  • Progressive offset is significant in the long irons – can cause overdraws for some
  • Not for low handicappers who want workability and feedback
  • 6-club standard set – custom configurations may be needed for full bag coverage

Who Should Choose the G740 Steel?

  • Mid-to-high handicappers (12+) who want maximum distance and forgiveness
  • Players with moderate swing speeds who generate reasonable club head speed with steel
  • Golfers who strike the ball low on the face lose significant distance as a result
  • Anyone upgrading from the G730 who wants a tangible step forward in performance
  • Players who value consistency over workability

Ping G740 Graphite Irons

Ping G740 Graphite Irons

The G740 Graphite Irons are built on the same exceptional head design as the steel version but fitted with the Ping ALTA CB Blue shaft (available in Senior, Regular, and Stiff). At £1,099 for a 6-club set – just £50 more than the steel – the graphite option represents excellent value for the players it is designed to serve.

The ALTA CB Blue is a counter-balanced graphite shaft with a mid-low kick point, designed to promote a higher, easier launch with less physical effort required. For senior golfers, players with joint issues, or anyone whose swing speed has reduced over time, graphite shafts in irons are no longer a compromise – they are the right technical choice.

Strengths

  • Same forgiving head as the steel version
  • Lighter overall weight – easier to swing faster
  • Reduced vibration transmitted to hands and joints
  • ALTA CB Blue promotes high, easy launch
  • Only £50 more than the steel option

Considerations

  • Less feel feedback than steel for those who prefer it
  • Senior/Regular/Stiff only – no X-Stiff option
  • Not for faster swing speeds where steel offers better control

Who Should Choose the G740 Graphite?

  • Senior golfers or those with slower swing speeds
  • Players experiencing elbow, wrist, or shoulder discomfort with steel shafts
  • Anyone who has been told by a fitter that graphite is the better choice for their swing
  • Golfers who want maximum launch and carry distance without requiring faster swing speeds

How the Ping G740 Compares: G440 and i540

The G740 does not exist in isolation. Ping has a well-structured iron lineup in 2025, and understanding where the G740 sits relative to the G440 and the i540 is essential to making the right choice for your game.

The Key Distinction: The G740 and G440 are both game-improvement irons from Ping, but they serve meaningfully different golfers.

The G440 is a game-improvement iron with a players-inspired shape – it looks cleaner at address and suits the mid-handicapper who wants forgiveness without a large profile. The G740 removes that visual compromise entirely and goes all-in on maximum forgiveness. If you are a 20-handicapper looking at the G440, you would almost certainly be better served by the G740. If you are an 8-handicapper, the G740, G440, or i540 is likely a better fit for your ball-striking level. Our Ping G440 review covers that family in more detail.

Mark Crossfield’s Verdict on the Ping G740

Mark Crossfield, our PGA professional and one of golf’s most-watched independent reviewers with over 330 million YouTube views, tested the G740 irons on course and offered some genuinely compelling observations. Here are his key takeaways.

Mark on the look and design philosophy: “This is exactly what I want to see from a Ping iron. Look at this triangular shape. It just shouts and screams, ‘Help! Game improvement. Help me launch the ball’ – which is everything most people watching this video actually need help with.”

Mark’s point here is important. The G740 makes no attempt to disguise what it is. For a golfer who needs maximum help, that honesty in design is a genuine asset – every element of the club is working for performance, not aesthetics.

Mark on performance data from his 7-iron testing: “We’re carrying 206 average yards. That’s exactly where I would put these clubs. They’re powerful. They’re launching high. I feel confident with them. Look at the launch – 17 degrees. It’s to the top end of my tolerance.”

Mark was swinging at around 91mph with a 7-iron and recorded 135mph ball speed – numbers that reflect how efficiently the G740 converts swing speed into ball speed, even from an already accomplished striker.

Mark on who these irons are for: “Who are these clubs for? My conclusion was they’re really for anyone. You’ve just got to drop your ego. If you can drop all those ego ideas around golf and just work more with what’s going to perform best for you, you’re going to find it hard to find something that performs better.”

This is Mark at his most direct – and he is right. The biggest barrier to golfers choosing super-game-improvement irons is pride, not performance. If the G740 helps you score better, that is what matters.

Mark on on-course testing: “The G740s didn’t let me down. As I expected, they’re friendly. I felt like I could swing at full speed. There was so much help in that head. I’m so used to looking at this size of club now that I just can’t imagine going back to smaller.”

On-course performance is ultimately what matters – and Mark’s experience confirms that the G740 translates its range and launch monitor numbers into real scoring situations.

Ping G740 Irons Buying Guide: Which Option is Right for You?

Steel vs Graphite: The Key Decision

START HERE: Steel or Graphite?
Priority 1: Swing Speed

Is your driver swing speed above 85mph?

  • YES → Steel is almost certainly the right choice. Proceed to Priority 2.
  • NO → Graphite is likely better. Proceed to Priority 3.
Priority 2: Joint Comfort

Do you experience any elbow, wrist, or shoulder discomfort during or after a round?

  • YESConsider Graphite – the reduced vibration transmission is a meaningful benefit regardless of swing speed.
  • NOChoose the G740 Steel (£1,049) – the AWT 3.0 shaft is an excellent match for this head.
Priority 3: Budget

The graphite option is only £50 more at £1,099. For senior players or those with slower swing speeds, graphite irons represent the right technical choice – the marginal price difference is well worth it.

  • Slower swing speed / senior golferChoose the G740 Graphite (£1,099)

Player Profile Recommendations

The High Handicapper Who Wants Results

Profile: 18-36 handicap, has tried various sets without consistent improvement, tends to hit the ball low on the face, loses significant distance on mishits.

Recommendation: G740 Steel Irons

Why: The G740 is built specifically to rescue the low-face strike – the most common amateur mishit. The extreme perimeter weighting and lower CG will make a tangible difference to distance consistency.

Also consider a custom fitting session to ensure the loft spec (standard, Power, or Retro) is right for your swing.

The Senior Golfer Seeking More Distance

Profile: 60+ years old, swing speed has reduced over the years, wants to keep up with playing partners, may have some joint discomfort.

Recommendation: G740 Graphite Irons

Why: The ALTA CB Blue shaft promotes easier, higher launch without requiring faster swing speeds. The lighter overall weight helps maintain club head speed throughout a full round.

Consider also: Senior flex for swing speeds below 75mph.

The G730 Owner Ready to Upgrade

Profile: Currently playing G730 irons, happy with the category but aware that the new G740 represents meaningful improvements in forgiveness and launch technology.

Recommendation: G740 Steel Irons

Why: The step from G730 to G740 is not a marginal refresh. The wider sole, longer blade, and new PurFlex system represent a genuine engineering improvement. If you valued the G730, the G740 will feel like a significant step forward.

Consider also: Part-exchanging your G730 set to offset the cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

What handicap is the Ping G740 suitable for?

The G740 is primarily designed for mid-to-high handicap golfers, typically in the 12-36 range.

However, as Mark Crossfield points out, any golfer who prioritises performance over visual preference could benefit from them. The clubs are engineered to maximise forgiveness, distance consistency, and launch – qualities that help golfers at any level who value those characteristics. If you are a 10-handicapper who is honest about your ball-striking and wants maximum help, the G740 will serve you well. If you are a scratch golfer who demands workability and precise feedback, you would be better suited to the i540 or Ping’s Blueprint range.

How does the Ping G740 differ from the Ping G730?

The G740 represents a meaningful engineering step forward from the G730, not a cosmetic refresh.

The headline changes are a 22% wider sole (significantly wider than the G730), a longer blade length for greater perimeter weighting, a new 3-piece PurFlex cavity badge (replacing the previous single-piece design), and a lower CG achieved through a shorter hosel and a shallower face. The 5/6-iron length progression is also new and addresses a gapping issue that affected many G730 users. If you are currently playing the G730, the upgrade to G740 is genuinely worth considering.

Which shafts are available as no-upcharge-fitted options on the G740?

Ping offers a broad range of fitted shaft options at no additional charge on the G740.

Steel options available at no upcharge include Dynamic Gold S300/X100, KBS Tour (R/S/X), NS PRO Modus3 105 (R/S/X), and Elevate MPH 95 (R/S). Graphite options include the ALTA CB Blue (SR/R/S) as stock, and the UST Recoil Dart 65 (A) and 75 (R/S). This flexibility means you can effectively get a custom-fitted set at the standard set price – one of the major advantages of buying Ping through an authorised retailer like The Golf Shop Online. Contact our team on 0800 3681097 to discuss the right shaft for your swing.

Are the G740 wedges any good, or should I buy separate wedges?

The G740 set wedges are genuinely capable – Ping has precision-milled the faces and grooves on all four wedge clubs in the set.

Milled grooves are sharper and more consistent than cast grooves, giving you better spin rates and more predictable performance from 100 yards and in. For most golfers buying the G740, the set of wedges (PW, UW, 50-degree, and 56-degree) will be more than adequate. If you want to explore dedicated wedge options later, the Ping Bunkr sand wedge is an excellent complement to this set.

Can I get the Ping G740 custom-fitted at The Golf Shop Online?

Yes – custom fitting is available through The Golf Shop Online, using advanced launch monitor technology.

As an authorised Ping retailer, we can build your G740 set to your exact specification – shaft, flex, loft spec (Standard, Power, or Retro), lie angle, and grip. Custom options beyond the standard set configuration are also available. Contact our PGA professional team on 0800 3681097 or at sales@thegolfshoponline.co.uk to discuss your requirements.

Is the Ping G740 conforming to the rules of golf?

Yes – all Ping G740 irons sold through The Golf Shop Online are fully conforming to the rules of golf.

Every club in the G740 range meets the equipment standards set out by The R&A, the governing body for golf outside the United States and Mexico. You can use these irons in all competitions, including club championships and handicap rounds, with complete confidence.

Final Verdict: Ping G740 Irons

Ping G740 Steel Irons – Our Top Pick

The G740 Steel is the iron we would recommend to the vast majority of players in the market for a super-game-improvement set. At £1,049 for 6 clubs, you are getting Ping’s most forgiving iron to date, fitted with a shaft – the AWT 3.0 – purpose-built to complement the head design. Mark Crossfield’s on-course testing confirms that the performance numbers are real: high launch, strong ball speeds, and genuine forgiveness on the mishits that cost most club golfers distance and accuracy. For anyone playing the G730, or any golfer who has been putting off the move to a more forgiving iron because of ego, the G740 Steel is the answer.

Ping G740 Graphite Irons – The Senior and Slower Speed Choice

At just £50 more than the steel version, the G740 Graphite is one of the better-value propositions in the Ping range for senior golfers. The ALTA CB Blue shaft is a quality graphite option that promotes a higher, easier launch, and the reduced vibration transmission is a genuine practical benefit for players with any joint concerns. If you are a senior golfer or have been recommended graphite by a fitter, the G740 Graphite should be at the top of your shortlist.

Whichever version you choose, the G740 range represents a substantial step forward from the G730 and one of the most technically accomplished entries in the super-game-improvement category. These are irons built with honesty – they know exactly who they are for, and they deliver on every promise.
