Golf Shoe Care

It is a well known fact that having a clean, correctly fitted, comfortable pair of golf shoes allows you to play your best golf.

Golf shoes are one of the most important parts of your golf equipment and when you find a good fitting comfortable pair, you need to make sure you look after them. People all too often leave wet, muddy golf shoes in the back of the car and expect them to continue to look good and stay fully waterproof time after time. Golf manufactures are becoming more wise to improper use and golfers can invalidate the warranty of the shoe if you have not followed the correct guidance.

Proper  care and attention is required to maintain and prolong there look, feel and comfort. Faced with a wide range of hazards, golf shoes must be thoroughly cleaned and properly stored between rounds.  Manufactures strongly recommend rotating shoes between rounds. If you maintain and rotate two pairs of golf shoes, these will last far longer that twice the life of a single pair.  It is increasingly common that golfers invest in a lightweight, waterproof and more casual looking fair weather golf shoe along with a quality full grain leather waterproof shoe for those wetter days.

Shoe Care Tips

  • Make sure you use a shoe horn when putting on your golf shoes. These cost very little and protect the heel counter of the shoe. If the heel counter damages, it can cause an improper fit within the heel which can lead to blistering and discomfort.
  • Clean leather or synthetic uppers after each round by removing dirt. You can buy a shoe cleaner for this but mild soap and water is fine.  Outsoles should be completely wiped clean of all dirt and grass however if you have a leather sole it is advisable to treat with leather oil. It is also a good time to make sure your cleats are correctly secured.
  • Allow to air dry at room temperature, do not leave in a shoe bag.
  • When fully dry, white-based shoes can be protected by applying a white shoe creme. This will remove unwanted scuff marks as well as conditioning the leather. Dark-based shoes should use a combination of colour shoe creme to maintain the look and conditioning of the leather. If you have a suede shoe then use a liquid cleaner and brush to clean in the direction of the nap.  Once cleaned, brush against the direction of the nap to regenerate the original look and feel.

If your shoes become excessively soaked.

  • Place crumpled newspaper inside for 8-10 hours to soak up all excess water.
  • Remove newspaper and replace with a correctly sized cedar shoe tree. This will help bring the shoe back to normal shape, smooth the linings and absorb any remaining water. Cedar shoe trees have absorption properties and make them far more effective than plastic shoe trees.
  • Allow to air dry as mentioned above. Do not dry using a hair dryer or by putting them on a radiator. This will damage the leather.
