You will find that there are 4 main styles of Golf Putter. You will have the blade, the half mallet, the full mallet and 2 ball/modern design

The blade putter is very simple and is like the old style putter. You do not see many of the modern players using this style but they are simple with no distractions and one of the most famous was the bullseye that was made by Titleist.

The half mallet is quite popular and the most famous style of this type would be the ping B60. They tend to be heel and toe weighted and are more forgiving than the blade style.

The mallet style has gained quite a following over the past 5 years. They tend to have nice alignment guides on the top and are very forgiving. A really nice style.

The odyssey 2 ball putter is one of the most famous styles on the market and is the biggest selling putter of all time. Since it’s arrival you see many modern versions and slight variations of this them but the 2 ball really is one of the best putters on the market as it helps you line up so well.

Is loft important?

A putter will only have a few degrees of loft and this is important as zero loft would cause the ball to jump at impact. If you have a fairly standard style the loft on most putters should not be something to worry about.

What length of putter should I choose?

When you putt you want to be comfortable. A lot of golfers seem to prefer a putter that is slightly shorter in length and we find that 34 inches is the most popular length.

Of course if you want to look at a belly style or broom handled style you will need to be careful in your choice and we would recommend you take some advice before purchasing this style of putter.

Why do some putters have these face inserts?

The modern trend is to have a different material within the face of the putter. This gives a different feel for the golfer and some players prefer a hard feel and some prefer a softer feel. You will also find that some inserts are deigned to make the golf ball roll better or to start rolling quicker. We like the putters with insert and you just need to decide if you prefer a soft or hard feel.

Face balanced or toe balanced?

You will generally find two style of putters of which one would be a face balance style and the other a toe balanced putter. A face balance putter if in your fingers will tend to sit parallel to the ground (face up) and this style of putter tends to suit a player with a fairly straight back and through style. The to balance putter style will have the toe drop down if held in your fingers. You would generally find that a player with a more rounded stroke would like this sort of putter.

Should I use a putter cover?

Definitely. Take care of your putter and it will take care of you. Also if you do end up selling it you will get a higher price.

Do I need to worry about shaft flex with a putter?

No

Will I need a graphite shaft in my putter?

The vast majority of putters have a steel shaft. A putt is a short shot and graphite is not required for these shots

Terminology

Flat stick Wand
