Introduction
The Garmin Approach S12, or Garmin S12 as most golfers call it, has been one of the best-selling GPS watches in our golf GPS range for several seasons, and for a simple reason: it does the basics brilliantly and costs little more than a dozen premium golf balls. In this Garmin S12 review, we look at whether that is still enough in 2026.
For this Garmin S12 review, we compare it directly with three alternatives from our range: the cheaper Bushnell Phantom 2 Slope handheld, the slope-equipped Bushnell iON Elite and the step-up Garmin Approach S44. If you are still weighing watch versus handheld, our guide to the best GPS golf watches and our top 5 golf GPS devices roundup are good places to broaden your search.
We have not physically tested the Garmin S12 on the course. This Garmin S12 review is an expert buyer’s assessment based on Garmin’s published specifications, our own product listing, 55 verified reviews from customers who bought it from us, and the product knowledge of our PGA professional team. Where a specification is not published, we say so rather than guess. All scores are our own editorial judgements, and all prices are current.
What to look for in a GPS golf watch
Readability
Big numbers and a display that stays clear in bright sun matter more than pixel counts.
Battery life
A full round takes around 4 to 5 hours of GPS. Anything over 15 hours means one charge can cover several rounds.
Course data
Front, middle and back yardages are essential. Hazards, lay-ups and movable pin positions add real value on unfamiliar courses.
Running costs
Check whether core features need a paid membership. The S12 and all three alternatives here work fully without one.

Our verdict: Garmin S12
A lightweight, button-operated golf watch that gives clear front, middle and back yardages, hazard distances and a digital scorecard on 43,000+ preloaded courses, with no subscription needed.
Design and build
The first thing to say in any Garmin S12 review is how little the watch weighs. At 34.1 g it is lighter than most everyday watches, and the 43.7 mm round case sits comfortably on smaller wrists as well as larger ones. A watch you forget you are wearing is one you will actually wear every round.
The case is a polymer design rather than metal, and the 5 ATM water rating means rain and sweat are no concern. It comes in several colours and looks like a normal sports watch off the course.
Display and ease of use
A common question in every Garmin S12 review is the screen. The S12 uses a 0.9 inch memory-in-pixel screen at 175 x 175 pixels. On paper that sounds modest next to the AMOLED panel on the S44, but MIP displays are designed to be read in direct sunlight, and the numbers are large. You get the distance to the middle of the green front and centre, with front and back alongside.
Control is by four buttons rather than a touchscreen. Several of our customers say they prefer this, and buttons work reliably with wet hands or a glove on. The menus are shallow and quick to learn.
Accuracy and course data
The core of this Garmin S12 review is the course data. The S12 comes preloaded with more than 43,000 courses worldwide and updates them wirelessly through the Garmin Golf app. It shows yardages to the front, middle and back of the green, plus distances to hazards, lay-ups and doglegs, so you know what you need to carry and where to stop short.
Green View lets you manually move the pin position. There are no hole maps, slope or play-like distances. For straightforward distance work, the data is exactly what most club golfers need.
Battery and charging
Battery life is where this Garmin S12 review gets most positive, because the watch punches well above its price. Garmin quotes up to 30 hours in GPS mode and up to 10 weeks as an everyday watch. That is double the 15 hours Garmin quotes for the S44 with its always-on colour display.
Charging uses Garmin’s proprietary clip cable, so keep the supplied lead somewhere handy.
App, scoring and shot tracking
For scoring, the Garmin S12 has a digital scorecard and tracks basic stats such as putts, fairways and greens in regulation. Rounds upload to the free Garmin Golf app for your records. An optional paid Garmin Golf membership adds extras such as green contour data on selected courses, viewed on your phone rather than the watch, but none of the core features needs it.
You can measure shot distances manually from the watch. For automatic club-by-club tracking, the S12 is compatible with Garmin’s Approach CT10 sensors, sold separately. If tracking is a priority, our guide to golf shot tracking explains the options in more depth.
- Exceptional battery life for the price
- Feather-light and comfortable for all wrist sizes
- Clear sunlight-readable numbers and simple buttons
- No subscription needed for any core feature
- Two-year Garmin warranty
- No hole maps or colour display
- No slope or plays-like distances
- No automatic shot detection without CT10 sensors
- Proprietary charging cable

Battery life in GPS mode (hours)
Manufacturer figures. S44 figure is with the always-on display while golfing. Real-world life varies with settings and temperature.
Weight (grams, lighter is better)
The Phantom 2 Slope is a handheld designed to clip to a bag or trolley, so it is not worn on the wrist.
Two-year cost per round (104 rounds)
Purchase price divided by 104 rounds (one a week for two years). None of these devices requires a subscription, so no fees are added. Garmin’s optional paid membership is not included.
Garmin S12 review: our editorial ratings (out of 10)
These are our editorial scores, based on published specifications, customer reviews and our PGA professionals’ product knowledge. They are not measured test results. Accuracy reflects the data available (no slope or hole maps) rather than a measured error figure.
Garmin S12 review: how it compares with the alternatives
No Garmin S12 review would be complete without looking at the rivals. Here is when each alternative makes more sense.

Best budget pick: Bushnell Phantom 2 Slope
A compact handheld that clips to your bag or trolley with Bushnell’s BITE magnet, adds slope-adjusted distances and costs a little less than the S12.
Choose the Phantom 2 Slope if you simply do not like wearing a watch, or if you play a hilly course and want slope-compensated yardages for practice and social rounds. It is one of our most popular GPS units, rated 4.9 out of 5 from 26 verified reviews.
The trade-offs are a one-year warranty rather than two, an 18-hour rather than 30-hour battery, and it lives on your bag rather than your wrist.

Best for slope: Bushnell iON Elite
Bushnell’s slope-equipped watch adds a colour touchscreen, hole maps with shot planning and slope-compensated distances in a light 38 g package.
The iON Elite is the better choice if you want a watch with slope for practice rounds and a colour screen with hole maps, and you are happy to spend around £59 more than the S12. Slope can be disabled for competitions.
The compromise is battery life. Bushnell quotes 12+ hours, well under half the S12’s figure, so you will be charging after every round or two. The warranty is also one year rather than two.

Best step up: Garmin Approach S44
The natural upgrade within Garmin’s range, adding a bright AMOLED touchscreen, hazard and lay-up views, AutoShot shot detection and smartwatch notifications.
Choose the S44 if you want a watch you will wear all day, with smart notifications and a far richer colour display, plus automatic shot distance tracking without buying sensors. Our full Garmin S44 review covers it in depth, and our best Garmin golf watches guide ranks the whole family.
You pay over twice the price of the Garmin S12, and GPS battery life drops to a quoted 15 hours with the always-on display.

Garmin S12 review: frequently asked questions
Is the Garmin S12 legal in competitions?
Yes, in most competitions.
The S12 measures distance only and has no slope or wind function, so it conforms to the Rules of Golf on distance-measuring devices. Under Rule 4.3, these devices are allowed unless the Committee has introduced a Local Rule banning them, so it is always worth checking the noticeboard or with your club before a competition round.
Does the Garmin S12 need a subscription?
No, all the core features are free.
Course yardages, hazards, Green View, the scorecard and course updates all work without paying anything extra. Garmin offers an optional paid Garmin Golf membership with extras such as green contour data on selected courses, shown in the phone app rather than on the watch. Most S12 owners never need it.
Do I need my phone with me to use the S12?
No, the watch works on its own.
The courses are stored on the watch, and it uses its own GPS to work out your position, so you can leave your phone in the bag or at home. You will want the free Garmin Golf app to set the watch up, update courses wirelessly and upload your scorecards after the round.
How long does the Garmin S12 battery last?
Up to 30 hours in GPS mode.
Garmin quotes up to 30 hours of GPS use and up to 10 weeks as a normal watch. A round typically takes four to five hours, so in practice that is several rounds between charges.
What warranty does the S12 come with?
A full two-year manufacturer warranty.
As an authorised Garmin retailer, we supply genuine UK stock covered by Garmin’s two-year warranty. On top of that you get our 60-day returns policy for unused items. If you have any issues, our team can help you through the process by phone on 0800 3681097 or by email.
Should I buy a GPS watch or a rangefinder?
It depends on what distances you need most.
A GPS watch like the S12 gives front, middle and back yardages and hazards instantly, without line of sight. A laser gives the exact distance to the flag but needs a steady hand and a clear view. Browse our rangefinders if pin distances are your priority.

Final verdict: our Garmin S12 review conclusion
Our Garmin S12 review comes down to this: the S12 does not try to be clever, and that is its strength. You get dependable front, middle and back yardages, hazards and a moveable pin on 43,000+ courses, a 30-hour battery and a watch so light you forget it is there, all for £109.99 with no fees.
If you want slope, colour maps or automatic tracking, the iON Elite and S44 are worth the extra spend. For everyone else, and especially for first-time GPS buyers, this Garmin S12 review awards it 8.6 out of 10, and it remains one of the best-value golf gadgets you can buy.
