Should I Play Hard or Soft Golf Balls?

By on May 12, 2022

‘Should I play hard or soft golf balls?’ is a common question from golfers at various levels of the game looking to fine-tune their setup and find the best equipment for their game. Thankfully our head professional Mark Crossfield has come up with the answers to break down any myths and give you the advice to make sure you’re choosing the best ball for you!

What’s the Difference?

The main thing you’ll notice between a hard and soft ball is the feel and sound it makes off the clubface. Although this won’t be particularly noticeable off the tee, with a wedge or putter in hand, a firmer golf ball will have more of a ‘clicky’ sound and feel. However, a common misconception is that this feel results in less spin and performance which is no longer the case at all. In the past, harder golf balls were seen as a more budget option that didn’t have any spin whereas nowadays performance isn’t compromised. Soft or hard golf balls are now available at both premium or budget price points and everywhere in between.

With so many golf balls now available to choose from, you can play a softer golf ball from a budget range or a firm ball at a premium price and everything in between. Admittedly, price does correlate to overall performance so a firm budget ball won’t perform to the durability and spin levels of its premium counterpart but nowadays it is much easier to find a feel that you like and match that to a budget that suits you. The ball is one thing you use more than any on the course, so it is worth ensuring you are playing the best one for you.
