Introduction

The PowaKaddy FX5 sits in the sweet spot of the electric trolley market. It is the top of the standard FX Collection, which means you get PowaKaddy’s full-size PowaFrame chassis, the 30-volt power system and the brand’s best non-GPS colour screen, without stepping up to the four-figure GPS models.

It is aimed at the golfer who has decided that carrying is finished, or that pushing a manual cart up hills is no longer fun. If you walk 18 holes regularly, play on undulating parkland, and want a trolley that lasts several seasons rather than a couple, this is the tier where electric trolleys start to feel like proper equipment rather than a gadget.

We think it deserves attention for one simple reason: it takes almost everything from the more expensive models and removes only the features most golfers already have on their phone or watch. If you are still weighing up the category as a whole, our electric golf trolley buying guide is a useful companion piece to this review.

Below, we look at what the Powakaddy FX5 does well, where it asks you to compromise, and how it compares with the rest of our PowaKaddy trolley range. Our round-up of the best electric golf trolleys adds the wider market picture.

Best all-rounder: PowaKaddy FX5

Electric trolley · 18 hole lithium · 9.8kg without battery

PowaKaddy’s flagship non-GPS trolley pairs a bright 2.8″ colour widescreen display with the low-profile PowaFrame chassis and a whisper-quiet 30-volt motor. The 1-Click folding system is the simplest in the FX Collection, and the frame is 20% smaller than the old Freeway model.

PowaKaddy has been building electric trolleys in the UK since the 1980s, and the FX Collection is its core range. The Powakaddy FX5 is the flagship of that collection, which matters because it inherits the chassis, motor and battery system used further up the line rather than cut-down versions.

In practice that means the Powakaddy FX5 feels like a much more expensive trolley than it is. The frame is stiff, the wheels track straight on a side slope, and the motor does not labour on the sort of climb that makes budget trolleys whine. It is a mature product doing a well-understood job properly.

What we like

The 2.8″ colour screen is genuinely readable

Most trolleys in this price bracket give you a monochrome LCD that washes out the moment the sun comes over your shoulder. The Powakaddy FX5 uses a 2.8″ full colour widescreen display, and PowaKaddy has clearly prioritised brightness and contrast rather than just adding colour for the sake of it.

The practical benefit is that you can glance down and read your speed setting, battery level and distance figures without stopping or shading the screen with your hand. There is also an LCD backlight control system with a power-save mode, so the backlight switches off after 20 minutes of non-use rather than quietly draining the battery.

1-Click folding that actually is one click

Folding is where trolleys are won and lost, because it is the bit you do twice every round in a car park, usually in a hurry. The Powakaddy FX5 uses the simplest folding system in the FX Collection, and the frame collapses down 20% smaller than the previous PowaKaddy Freeway model.

Folded dimensions are 805mm high, 560mm wide and 346mm deep, which fits comfortably in most estate and hatchback boots alongside a bag. The metallic sports wheels are also easily removable if you need to squeeze it into something smaller for a trip away.

Who benefits most

Golfers who load and unload alone, and anyone who has wrestled with a two-stage fold in the rain. One movement, no trapped fingers.

Boot friendly

20% smaller folded than the old Freeway chassis, with removable wheels for tighter spaces or a trolley travel bag.

A 30-volt motor with real hill-climbing power

The Powakaddy FX5 runs a whisper-quiet 30-volt, 230-watt motor paired with a high-power 30-volt speed controller. The extra voltage over a typical 24-volt or 28 volt system shows up on wet slopes and long climbs, where the trolley holds its chosen speed instead of dragging and forcing you to nudge the dial up.

It is also noticeably quiet. That sounds trivial until you play behind someone whose trolley hums all the way down the fairway. Holding a conversation without a motor droning underneath it is one of the quiet pleasures of a good trolley.

MAG-LOK bag attachment removes the fiddly lower strap

MAG-LOK is PowaKaddy’s magnetic bag attachment system. A strong neodymium magnet locks a compatible PowaKaddy cart bag onto the trolley without the usual lower strap, so mounting the bag becomes a matter of dropping it into place rather than threading a buckle.

Every PowaKaddy electric trolley sold from 1st March 2023 is MAG-LOK compatible, and the fitting comes attached to compatible cart bags with a hex key for installation. If you already own a non-PowaKaddy bag, it still works normally, with the Key-Lok system preventing lateral twisting. Pairing the Powakaddy FX5 with a cart bag like the PowaKaddy Edge is the cleanest setup.

Round data you will actually use

The Powakaddy FX5 adds a genuinely useful set of on-board functions. ADF, the Automatic Distance Function, sends the trolley ahead of you by anything from 5 to 50 yards, which is the difference between a nice idea and something you use on every par three.

Beyond that, you get a shot-distance measurement feature covering drives and approaches, total trolley mileage, a calorie counter, a clock, a round timer, and the ability to switch between yards and metres, or miles and kilometres per hour. There is also an anti-tamper dial control and a security pin lock, which is reassuring if your trolley lives in a club storage rack rather than your garage.

Things to consider

None of these is dealbreakers, but they are the points we raise on the phone before a customer commits.

It is a full-size frame, not a compact one. Folded, the Powakaddy FX5 measures 805mm by 560mm by 346mm. That is fine for most boots, but if you drive a small city car or share the boot with a pushchair, the ultra-compact CT series folds considerably smaller for a similar or slightly higher outlay.

The 18-hole battery is exactly that. It is sized for a single round. If you regularly play 27 or 36 holes in a day, or you like to leave the trolley several days between charges without thinking about it, the 36-hole version is the better buy and worth the difference.

There is no GPS mapping. The Powakaddy FX5 measures your shot distances and total mileage, but it does not show hole graphics or front-, middle-, and back-yardages. If you want that on the handle rather than on a watch, you are looking at the PowaKaddy CT10 GPS or the RX range instead.

Pros and cons

Strengths
  • Bright, readable colour display. The 2.8″ widescreen panel is legible in sunlight, with a power-saving backlight that switches off after twenty minutes.
  • Strong 30-volt drivetrain. The 230-watt motor and matched speed controller hold pace on wet hills where cheaper systems slow down.
  • Simplest fold in the FX Collection. One-click, 20% smaller than the old Freeway chassis, with removable wheels for tight boots.
  • Long warranty cover. Up to 5 years of UK manufacturer’s warranty and backup service for a product you will use weekly.
Considerations
  • Full-size folded footprint. Roomy boots are fine; small hatchbacks may prefer the ultra-compact CT chassis.
  • 18-hole battery only in this version. Frequent 36-hole players should step up to the larger pack rather than charging mid-day.
  • No hole mapping. Distance functions are trolley-based, not GPS, so you will still want a watch or rangefinder.

Who it suits

Electric trolleys are less about handicap than about how often you walk and where you play, but three profiles cover most of the golfers who end up buying a Powakaddy FX5.

The committed club golfer

Profile: 8 to 18 handicap, plays a weekend medal plus a midweek roll-up, walks every round on undulating parkland.

Recommendation: The Powakaddy FX5 as reviewed, with the 18-hole battery.

Why: Two rounds a week means the fold, the screen and the motor all get used constantly, and the 5-year warranty cover makes sense at that frequency.

The golfer easing the load

Profile: 18 to 28 handicap, often a senior golfer or someone managing a back or knee issue, moving from a push trolley.

Recommendation: The Powakaddy FX5, ideally in the 36-hole battery version.

Why: Pause and resume, plus fine-grained speed control, make hills manageable, and the bigger pack removes any charging anxiety between rounds.

The data-minded improver

Profile: Scratch to 12 handicap, already uses a shot tracker or GPS watch, wants the trolley to add rather than duplicate.

Recommendation: The Powakaddy FX5 rather than a GPS trolley.

Why: ADF and shot measurement complement a watch instead of repeating it, and the money saved buys a decent rangefinder.

How it compares

Two trolleys sit either side of the Powakkaddy FX5 in most customers’ shortlists. The Motocaddy 2026 SE Extended undercuts it on price, and the PowaKaddy CT6 asks a little more for a much smaller folded package.

The Motocaddy SE Extended is a lot of trolley for £549, and its cable-free CLICK ‘N’ CONNECT battery is arguably the neatest battery system on the market. What you give up is the colour screen, the distance functions and the extra two volts of drive.

The PowaKaddy CT6 shares the Powakaddy FX5 motor, battery platform, and screen technology, but folds down to a dramatically smaller size thanks to the Simple-2-Fold chassis and an integrated carry handle. If boot space is your binding constraint, pay the £120 difference. If it is not, the Powakaddy FX5 offers a slightly roomier chassis and a wider ADF range for less money.

For a broader head-to-head across brands, our comparison of the PowaKaddy Dri-Tech and Motocaddy Dry Series cart bags covers how each brand’s bags mount, which matters more than most people expect.

Technology explained

PowaKaddy uses many trademarked names. Here is what each one actually does once the trolley is out of the box.

PowaFrame chassis

A low-profile alloy frame that sits close to the ground and shields the motor housing and wiring. It is easy to hose down, keeps ground clearance sensible on rough paths, and adds torsional stiffness so the trolley tracks straight across a slope.

Plug’n’Play 30V battery

A slim lithium pack that drops onto the frame without loose leads. It has a push power button with an LED and a top isolator switch, so you can cut the power cleanly rather than leaving the system on standby between rounds.

ADF, Automatic Distance Function

Set a distance from 5 to 50 yards and the trolley drives itself that far ahead, then stops. Useful for sending the bag on to the next tee, or clearing a green so you are not walking back for it.

MAG-LOK bag attachment

A neodymium magnet in the base plate that grips a compatible PowaKaddy cart bag with no lower strap. The bag lifts on and off in one movement, and holds firm through wind and rough ground.

Anti-tamper dial control

A deliberate two-stage action on the speed dial, so the trolley cannot be switched on by a knock in the boot or a curious child in the club storage room. A security pin lock backs it up.

USB-C charging port

Powers a phone, GPS watch or rangefinder from the trolley battery mid-round. Handy in winter, when cold weather drains a phone faster than the trolley uses its own capacity.

Our verdict

★★★★☆ 4.5 out of 5

The Powakaddy FX5 is the trolley we would buy with our own money if GPS mapping was not a priority. It takes the parts that actually determine how a trolley feels day to day, the chassis, the motor, the battery and the fold, and delivers all four at a standard you would normally pay several hundred pounds more for.

The colour screen is the headline feature, and it earns its place for being legible rather than for being colourful. ADF, the shot-measurement functions, and the USB-C port are all sensible additions rather than spec-sheet filler, and MAG-LOK makes the daily routine of loading a bag noticeably quicker.

It loses half a star only for the two obvious limits: a full-size folded footprint that will not suit every car, and an 18-hole battery that asks a question of anyone who plays 36. Neither is a flaw so much as a choice, and both have an answer elsewhere in the PowaKaddy range. At £629, this is the electric trolley we recommend most often.

FAQs

Will the 18-hole battery last a full round?

Yes, an 18-hole pack is designed to complete a standard round comfortably.

Very hilly courses, heavy bags and soft winter ground all draw more power, so if you regularly play a demanding course or want to go several rounds between charges, the 36 hole version is the safer choice.

Will my existing golf bag fit the Powakaddy FX5?

Any standard cart bag will fit, and most stand bags will too.

MAG-LOK only works with compatible PowaKaddy cart bags, but the trolley’s upper and lower straps hold any bag securely, with the Key-Lok system preventing lateral twisting. Browse our golf bag range if you are updating both.

How do I look after the battery over winter?

Store it indoors while partially charged, and top it up every few weeks.

Lithium packs dislike being left flat or sitting in a freezing garage. Bring the battery inside, keep it at about half to three-quarters charge if it will be idle, and use the top isolator switch so nothing is quietly drawing current.

Is the Powakaddy FX5 allowed in club competitions?

Electric trolleys are permitted at the vast majority of UK clubs.

Some courses restrict trolley use in very wet conditions or on certain holes. Check your own club’s local rules, and note that measuring distance is permitted under the Rules of Golf unless a local rule says otherwise.

How much boot space do I need?

Folded, the Powakaddy FX5 is 805mm high, 560mm wide and 346mm deep.

That fits most saloon, estate, and SUV boots, along with a bag. The wheels come off easily if you need a slimmer package, and a trolley travel bag protects the frame if it shares space with luggage.

What warranty comes with the trolley?

Up to 5 years of UK manufacturer’s warranty and backup service.

PowaKaddy has a well-established UK service operation, which is a major reason we stock the brand. We are an authorised PowaKaddy retailer, so your warranty is registered correctly from the day it arrives.
