By on January 30, 2020

Byron Nelson was the first man to win 50 PGA tour events, and he won 11 straight in 1945. Byron became a golfing legend and he wasn’t even supposed to make it past birth. Byron was exposed to rabies as a child, and he got typhoid fever where he nearly died. He began caddying at age 12 and started playing for money in 1932. Byron Nelson was a golfing legend and was one of the first major stars of the sport.

Key Takeaways:

  • Byron Nelson once won 11 consecutive tournaments on his way to becoming the first man to achieve 50 PGA Tour wins.
  • After winning the Masters in 1937, Nelson acquired the nickname “Lord Byron.”
  • Nelson won five Majors, but the tally would have been higher if not for the disruption of World War 2 and his early retirement.

“He was one of the greatest golfers of all time but retired from full-time competitive play aged 34 to become a rancher.”
