Choosing between Garmin golf watches in 2026
Garmin golf watches have become the default choice on UK fairways, and for good reason. Every model in the Approach range gives you accurate distances to the front, middle and back of the green on more than 43,000 preloaded courses, then syncs your round to the Garmin Golf app. The harder question is which one to buy, because prices in our Garmin golf range run from just over £100 to more than £500.
The difference comes down to screen, smart features and how much you care about fitness tracking off the course. If you are still deciding between a watch, a handheld or a laser, our guide to GPS golf watches and our round-up of the top five golf GPS devices compare the formats side by side.
This guide focuses on Garmin alone. Our PGA professional team has ranked the five Approach watches we stock, explained the technology in plain English and matched each one to a type of golfer. If you are torn between the two mid-range models, our Garmin S50 vs S70 comparison goes even deeper.
What to look for in a Garmin golf watch
Screen type
AMOLED touchscreens on the S44, S50 and S70 are bright and colourful. The S12 uses a simpler sunlight-readable display that sips power and is easy to read in bright conditions.
Battery life
Garmin quotes up to 30 hours of GPS use for the S12 and up to 15 hours for the S44 and S50. That is comfortably two rounds for most golfers before a charge.
Course data
All five come with 43,000+ CourseView maps. Hazard and layup distances help you plan tee shots instead of just reading yardage to the pin.
Smart golf features
PlaysLike Distance, virtual caddie advice, and green contours separate the premium models. Some features need a paid Garmin Golf watch membership.
Health and fitness
The S50 and S70 track heart rate, sleep and stress for everyday wear. The S12 is a pure golf watch.
Fit and size
The S70 comes in 42mm and 47mm cases. Consider whether you will wear it every day or only on the course.

Best overall: Garmin Approach S70 47mm
The flagship of Garmin’s watch range. A large, super-bright touchscreen, a ceramic bezel and the smartest on-course tools Garmin offers on the wrist, including a virtual caddie that suggests clubs based on your own data and the wind.
Among the Garmin golf watches we sell, the S70 47mm does the thinking for you. The virtual caddie learns how far you hit each club, factors in wind and elevation, then suggests a club and shows a shot dispersion chart so you can see which hazards are in play. For golfers who struggle with club selection on blustery UK links, that is a real scoring aid.
The 1.4-inch AMOLED screen is the largest in the range, making CourseView maps and hazard layouts much easier to read at a glance. Multi-frequency positioning sharpens accuracy under trees, and green contours show slopes with a Garmin Golf watch membership.
Off the course it tracks heart rate, sleep and training load around the clock, and it pairs with CT10 club trackers. Rated to 5 ATM, it shrugs off a wet round.
- Largest, brightest screen in the Approach line-up
- Virtual caddie and dispersion chart help course management
- Premium ceramic bezel looks smart off the course
- Full health, sleep and training features
- The most expensive Garmin in this guide
- Green contours need a paid Garmin Golf watch membership
- The 47mm case can feel large on slimmer wrists

Best value: Garmin Approach S44
The S44 brings a crisp AMOLED touchscreen and automatic shot detection to a sub-£250 price, covering everything most club golfers use on the course.
If you want a modern Garmin golf watch without paying flagship money, the S44 is where we point most customers. The 1.2-inch AMOLED screen runs at 390 by 390 pixels and supports optional always-on mode, so yardages stay clear even on a bright summer afternoon. PinPointer shows the direction of the green on blind shots, and Green View lets you move the pin manually for a more exact number.
Garmin AutoShot records shot distances automatically, and the built-in scorecard tracks putts, fairways and greens hit before syncing to the Garmin Golf watch app for handicap calculation. Tournament Mode makes it legal for competition use. Battery life is quoted at up to 15 hours in GPS mode and up to 10 days as a smartwatch.
- AMOLED screen at a mid-range price
- AutoShot and stat tracking built in
- Light at 42g with Gorilla Glass 3 lens
- Tournament Mode for club competitions
- No virtual caddie or PlaysLike Distance
- Fewer health features than the S50 and S70
- Silicone strap feels less premium than the S70

Best for fitness: Garmin Approach S50
The S50 pairs Garmin’s golf features with a genuinely deep fitness and health suite. If you want one watch for the course, the gym and everyday life, it is the most rounded option below the S70.
On the course, the S50 adds PlaysLike Distance, which adjusts yardages for elevation, and Hazard View to plan around bunkers, water and layups. It works with Garmin’s CT1 and CT10 trackers for full shot tracking. At just 29g with a breathable nylon strap, it is one of the most comfortable Garmin golf watches to wear for a full round.
Off the course is where it earns its price. A Morning Report summarises sleep, training and recovery, and you also get HRV Status, Pulse Ox, VO2 max, Body Battery and Garmin Coach training plans. Garmin Pay and onboard music storage mean you can leave your phone at home on a run.
For golfers who train in the gym to protect their back and add speed, this watch ties both sides together. Our practice aid guide has more ideas for structured winter training.
- Plays like Distance at a mid-range price
- Excellent health, sleep and recovery data
- Very light and comfortable to wear
- Garmin Pay and music storage
- No virtual caddie, which is reserved for the S70
- Green contours need a Garmin Golf watch membership
- Pricier than the S44 if you only want golf features

Best budget pick: Garmin Approach S12
Simple, light and very affordable. The S12 gives you accurate green distances, hazards and a digital scorecard without menus to wade through, plus the longest GPS battery life in this guide.
Not every golfer wants a smartwatch, and that is where the S12 shines. Of the Garmin golf watches in this guide, it is the most straightforward: switch it on, it finds the course, and it shows front, middle and back distances to the green on a high-resolution, sunlight-readable screen. Hazard and dogleg distances help with tee shots, and the scorecard means you can leave the pencil in the bag.
Battery life is quoted at up to 30 hours in GPS mode, which is double the S44 and S50 figure. It pairs with CT10 club trackers if you want to log shots later, and it makes a superb first GPS device or gift.
- Lowest-priced Garmin golf watch we stock
- Up to 30 hours of GPS battery
- Very easy to use with simple buttons
- Strong customer reviews on our site
- No touchscreen or colour maps
- No health or fitness tracking
- No PlaysLike Distance or virtual caddie

Best for small wrists: Garmin Approach S70 42mm
Everything that makes the S70 our top pick, in a smaller, lighter-looking case. Ideal for golfers with slimmer wrists, many lady golfers and anyone who wants a premium watch they will happily wear every day.
The 42mm S70 shares its software with the 47mm version, so you still get the virtual caddie with wind-adjusted club suggestions, PlaysLike Distance, green contours with a membership and full health tracking. The trade is a 1.2-inch screen rather than 1.4 inches, which is still bright and sharp but slightly smaller to read on the move.
If the bigger S70 feels too chunky, this is the answer, and it saves £50. It is the most discreet of our premium Garmin golf watches for everyday wear, and a natural gift for a partner who plays.
- Full S70 feature set at a lower price
- Neater case suits smaller wrists
- Ceramic bezel looks smart every day
- Works with CT10 trackers and TruSwing
- Smaller screen than the 47mm model
- Still a big outlay over the S50
- Some features need a Garmin Golf watch membership
Technology explained
Garmin golf watches come with plenty of feature names. Here is what each one does on the course.
CourseView maps
Full-colour hole maps on 43,000+ courses. Garmin pushes updates for the courses you play most, so new tees and bunkers appear automatically.
PlaysLike Distance
Adjusts the yardage for uphill and downhill shots. It is a useful practice and social round tool, but switch it off in competitions.
Virtual caddie
Exclusive to the S70 here. It learns your club distances, suggests a club based on wind and elevation, and then shows a dispersion chart.
AutoShot and CT10 trackers
AutoShot detects and records your shots. CT10 sensors screw into your grips and automatically log every club, putter included.
Green contours
Shows the slope of selected greens. It needs an active Garmin Golf watch membership, and the S12 shows it on your phone, not the watch.
Multi-frequency GPS
Found on the S70, it uses more satellite signals for better accuracy near trees, buildings and in deep valleys.
If you want to see what shot data can do for your practice, our guide to golf shot tracking explains how to turn numbers into lower scores.
Performance ratings
The scores below are our PGA professional team’s editorial ratings out of five, based on published specifications and how each watch fits its target golfer. They are not customer review scores.

Frequently asked questions
Are Garmin golf watches allowed in competitions?
Yes, as long as you switch off any features that break the Rules of Golf.
Distance-measuring devices are allowed unless a Local Rule bans them. Features such as PlaysLike Distance, club advice and wind data are not allowed during a competition round. The S44 has a Tournament Mode, and other models let you switch the features off. Always check your club’s Local Rules before teeing off.
Do I need a Garmin Golf membership?
No. All five watches work fully for distances, hazards and scoring without one.
A paid Garmin Golf watch membership unlocks extras such as green contours, handicap tools and leaderboards in the app. It is worth it if you want green slope data or play in Garmin’s online tournaments, but many golfers never subscribe. You can always try it later, since the watch doesn’t need it to give accurate yardages.
How long does the battery last on Garmin golf watches?
Between roughly 15 and 30 hours of GPS use, depending on the model.
Garmin quotes up to 30 hours in GPS mode for the S12 and up to 15 hours for the S44 and S50, with up to 10 days as a smartwatch for the latter two. That covers at least two rounds for most golfers. Charging once a week is typical if you also wear the watch day to day.
Which Garmin golf watch is easiest to use?
The Approach S12, because it is built around simple button controls.
There are no touchscreen menus to learn. It finds the course automatically and shows the three numbers most golfers need: front, middle and back of the green. That makes it ideal for beginners, older golfers and anyone who just wants yardage. It is also the cheapest Garmin we stock, at £109.99.
Is the S70 worth the extra over the S50?
It is if you want the virtual caddie and a premium finish.
Both share PlaysLike Distance and strong health tracking. The S70 adds the virtual caddie, a dispersion chart, multi-frequency GPS, a ceramic bezel, and a bigger screen on the 47mm version. If course management is your weak spot, the S70 earns its price. If you mainly want yardages and fitness data, the S50 is better value.
Can Garmin golf watches track every shot automatically?
They can when paired with Garmin’s CT10 club trackers.
The S44 has AutoShot, which detects many full shots from your swing. For complete tracking, including putts, CT10 sensors screw into the end of each grip and log every club you hit. All five watches in this guide are compatible, so you can add trackers later if you get hooked on stats.

Our verdict
If you want the most capable Garmin golf watch on your wrist, the Approach S70 47mm is our top pick. The virtual caddie, big AMOLED screen and premium build make it the complete package, and the 42mm version gives the same brains in a neater case.
For most club golfers, though, the S44 is the smart buy. It brings a modern touchscreen and automatic shot detection for well under £250. Choose the S50 if fitness tracking matters as much as golf, and the S12 if you simply want reliable distances at the lowest price.
Whichever you choose, all five Garmin golf watches come with free UK delivery and our 60-day returns policy. If you are still weighing up rivals, our Shot Scope X5 review and Shot Scope G6 watch review are worth a read, and laser fans should see our Bushnell Pro X3 rangefinder review.
