The Masters 2016 Reviewed
The Masters 2016 English Champion Danny Willett.
Steeped in History The Masters at Augusta National Georgia, is always the most talked about event in the Golfing Calendar. The first Major of the season, who’s going to win their first prestigious Green Jacket, or will another one be added to the collection of previous Masters Champions. A golf course designed to truly bring out the best and worst across the whole field. Augusta National is a true test for every golfer and thats why we love The Masters so much.
The Worlds Top players were set for a showdown, was it to be the year World No.1 Jason Day firmly makes his mark, a second Green Jacket for Jordan Spieth and his title retained for another year, or could the wait finally be over for Rory Mcilroy in getting the Grand Slam. However Sunday at The Masters prevailed at it was to be the year for Englishman Danny Willett to win himself his first Major and that all important and prestigious Green Jacket.
Danny Willett became the first European and Englishman to win Since Jose Maria Olazabal in 1999 and Sir Nick Faldo in 1986, to finally bridge the gap on the Americans. A fantastic day for European and English Golf.
Some would have considered Danny Willett a rank outsider, however this was no shock win, in the last 2 years he has been producing some fine performances and had begun making a name for himself. Now he has broken in to the Worlds Top 10 ranked at No.9 and will be considered among golf’s elite. A Masters Champion.
It wasn’t an entirely straight forward win for Danny Willett this year, you could say the golfing gods had there say among events. World No.3 Rory Mcilroy was a firm favourite, to try and finally with that elusive Grand Slam, however it wasn’t to be for Rory, with a weekend of lack lustre performance, Rory Mcilroy looked to be too tentative and afraid, to attack Augusta National and the wait will go on for him and his quest for a Green Jacket.
After a sensational first round 66 from Jordan Spieth, the defending Masters Champion looked at complete ease and control, like he had never left from the year before. Ready and waiting to secure his second Green Jacket. Jordan Spieth led The Masters everyday, and it started to look like he was running away with it again, as he extended his lead on Sunday -7 after 9 holes with a 4 stroke lead.
Amen Corner was fast approaching for Jordan Spieth, a famous collection of holes that have seen many of golfs great’s either rise or fall. The Par 3 12th playing 152 yards, considered one of the toughest holes, with a swirling wind, it can make club selection extremely difficult to carry the ball over Rays Creek and stop it dead on the green. This time for Jordan Spieth Augusta bit back as his ball landed short and made a splash in to the water. A drop shot and a heavy hit, lead to another ball in the water for Jordan and it was to become a tragic demise for the man who looked set to retain his title. Lost and dejected a 7 at the Par 3 12th took Jordan Spieths lead away from him in an instance and Danny Willett who was mapping his way round nicely, saw himself take the lead. The unravelling of Jordan Spieth paved the way for Danny Willett to take full control of his destiny and secure his first Major Win to become The Masters Champion 2016.
