Who is the best player never to have won a major golf championship?

At the moment you can say with certainty that Lee Westwood must be the best player never to have won a major as he is currently world number one and I cannot recall any other world numbers ones that have not won a major. As he has only just notched up the number one spot and he is still in his thirties I have high hopes that he will make the mark but we have said that about many other pretenders to the throne.

Two great golfers that come to mind are Adam Scott and Sergio Garcia and they really should have got at least one by now. Scott has not even come close and I can’t even recall a major were he was in contention which is astonishing for someone with such a good game and a worldwide tournament winner. Garcia has got closer and when playing at Carnoustie he had every golfers dream of needing a par to win the open however his putt lipped out and he was never going to beat Harrington in the playoff.

In some ways Colin Montgomerie should have the title as he was European number one for seven years in a row and came very close to winning on quite a few occassions but in many ways Colin has got his major with such great performances in the Ryder Cup and when he captained the team to victory earlier this year you felt that any demons that he may have had about winning majors have been pushed to the back of his mind.

Paul Casey, Luke Donald and Ian Poulter could lay claim to the title but they have not quite reached top gear yet and although they are all extremely talented golfers they have not been close enough yet to be considered but I do feel that the current european crop of golfers do have more majors in them and hopefully sooner rather than later.

For many years the title always went to Tom Kite however he got the monkey off his back when he was in his forties and for many years it’s hard to believe that Phil Mickelson could not cross the line but that is now well behind him with a hatful of majors.

It is an interesting debate and something the vast majority of golfers would love to be considered for but I bet those that are in the running certainly don’t like being in the list.
